Operation Khataza is a dynamic eight-piece band rooted in the streets of Observatory, Cape Town — a neighbourhood that has long been a meeting ground for counter-culturalism, new thinking, and the restless creative energy of a generation in motion.
Led by the enigmatic Farrah Khataza — a mystical character brought to life by singer/songwriter, guitarist, and selector Sanele Blaai — the band has been building a world as much as a sound since its formation in 2023. Operating under the slogan "Sonic Liberation Across Alkebulan" — Alkebulan being a pre-colonial name for the African continent — the band's sound is a captivating and eclectic fusion of Afro-futurist nostalgia. Drawing from a rich tapestry of genres including Zamrock, South African jazz, kwaito, soukous, highlife, R&B, blues, and rock & roll, Operation Khataza delivers music that is as political as it is celebratory: a weapon of love and liberation, aimed at re-awakening communities and dismantling social divisions.
Since forming, the band has wasted no time in making its presence felt. A ConcertsSA-funded national tour took the Operation across Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town, announcing themselves to audiences nationwide. They have shared stages with acclaimed South African outfit The Brother Moves On, and their high-impact, punchy live performances have earned them a reputation for energising and re-conscientising every room they enter.
On the recorded front, the band's track Azania has been signed to Cape Town vinyl label Moov Moov, with an original release and two commissioned remixes forthcoming on 12-inch maxi vinyl. Looking ahead, Operation Khataza is preparing the release of their debut album Vuka — an eight-track record due later this year, preceded by a four-month waterfall singles campaign.
Operation Khataza's mission is to awaken a generation. By (re)forming communities through music and smashing social divisions to pieces, the Operation carries its message far and wide — with a growing track record, a bold artistic vision, and a sound that demands to be heard.
"If South Africa in 2025 were a sound, it would be Operation Khataza... What does it mean to be free? I haven't found the answer yet, but I think I've heard its sound. It sounds like Operation Khataza. As Fabian said in their closing piece, 'I like what I hear — oh, I hear what I like.'"
"Central to Khataza is reciprocity, a symbiotic relationship between seven individuals and the operation, between a band and a fanbase, between a lineage and a departure: To unlearn is to understand for the first time. To trouble is to liberate."
